UNICEF HK Welcomes Sex Discrimination (Amendment) Ordinance

HONG KONG, 19 June 2021─The provisions on breastfeeding discrimination and harassment in The Sex Discrimination (Amendment) Bill 2020 and Discrimination Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance 2020 take effect today. Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) welcomes the enactment that will provide greater and more concrete protection for breastfeeding women. The amendment is a milestone that will help foster a breastfeeding-friendly environment in the city.

Breastfeeding gives children the best start in life. UNICEF HK is committed to promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding in Hong Kong.

In collaboration with Food and Health Bureau and the Department of Health, UNICEF HK launched the ‘Say Yes to Breastfeeding’ campaign in 2015 with the aim of raising public awareness on the needs of breastfeeding mothers. Since its launch, the campaign has received active responses from various sectors. Over 1,365 workplaces and 471 premises have been acknowledged as “breastfeeding-welcome”.

UNICEF HK is glad to see more corporates and employers are providing policy and facility supports to their employees on breastfeeding.

For every child, a good start.
